Generation R – exploring new ways to research / An Open Science editorial platform from the Leibniz Research Alliance Science 2.0

*The Decentralized Web: A Gutenberg Threshold!*

A Generation R Open Science theme running from late August to early October 2018, publishing regular blogposts and contributing learning resources to the Open Science MOOC.

Gen R takes a 'needs based approach' to researchers. In line with this editorial approach we look to find ways that researchers can make use of new Open Science developments — as conceptual models or in practical implementations.

*Why the Gutenberg threshold?*

There are two reasons for using the framing of an earlier information revolution, first, is the idea of a new technology pathway being put in place for knowledge, and second, that this technology is made from a convergence and number of associated technologies and ways of working. As examples for the decentralized web this is: the Merkle tree, cryptoIDs, content addressable, LOD, ontologies, DevOps, continuous integration, etc.

Key questions for Gen R around the theme are:

* The creation of new forms of governance in scholarly systems, and

* Increased speed and use of automation in the research cycle.

-- In research software and systems, and

-- speed of research and communication.

Currently the decentralized web has three different technology enabling models, and others that could be considered.

* DAT

* Solid
